SIMO field internship

IPSL, Paris 6, Paris 7 and Versailles-Saint-Quentin universities have organised a course for Master 2 students in the following topics:
Atmospheric research, the environment and climate change,

• Physical methods in remote-sensing,
• Planetology,
• Arctic Studies.

This course called SIMO (introductory course in observation methods) takes place at the Observatoire de Haute Provence (OHP) in autumn.

Students spend four days at OHP accompanied by lecturers. They are accommodated at the Jean Perrin guest house. In the field, atmospheric sounding and astronomical instruments are presented to them in small groups. Students can thus observe them, learn how they are used, ask questions of operators and scientists, and gain an understanding of how the theoretical knowledge they receive is applied. These visits are complemented by a series of lectures on experimental devices and measurement methods in astronomy and atmospheric physics. These presentations provide an opportunity to address scientific themes and results obtained at the OHP with 80 and 120 cm telescopes, its operational observation missions (e.g. NDACC), and, in particular, the latest remarkable discoveries recently made in astronomy (exoplanets, Mars, etc).
Practical sessions are offered to students on Lidar tools, the SAOZ spectrometer, greenhouse gas analysers, etc. These practical sessions allow students to observe the composition of the atmosphere in situ and help students become familiar with these techniques and their scientific utility. At night, the students have 80 cm and 120 cm telescopes at their disposal which allow them to visually observe planets and acquire images of remarkable objects (planets, nebulae, galaxies, etc.) in order to better understand properties of the Universe.
